This oval awl is well-suited for saddle stitch, where it makes a slightly larger hole that makes it easy to get the thread through. Attach the awl to a fitting awl handle. To ensure that the awl is held at the same 45-degree angle, it can be a good idea to either draw a small line at the end of the awl handle indicating the direction. Alternatively, you can also use an awl handle with flat sides so that it will not rotate during the process.
