Double Backs

Backs and Double Backs come from the best part of the hide. The surface is smooth, and the leather is firm and even with a consistent structure.

This makes them well suited to leatherwork where strength and consistency are important. Backs and Double Backs are available in different thicknesses and qualities and are suitable for belts, straps, bags and wallets.

Backs and Double Backs are among the finest cuts of leather.

What is a Back?

A Back is the middle part of the hide along the animal's back, where the fibre structure is typically dense and even. This gives you firm leather with a relatively even thickness, making the Back a popular cut for traditional leatherwork. A Double Back consists of the Back from both sides of the hide.

What can a Back be used for?

Backs are particularly suitable for projects where the leather needs to be firm and hold its shape. Depending on the thickness and quality, they can be used for belts, straps, bags, wallets, cases and many other leatherwork projects. The even structure also makes Backs a good choice when you need to cut longer or more uniform pieces from the leather.

Always check the properties and recommended uses of each product, as the different leather qualities can vary considerably.

Which thickness of Leather should I choose?

Backs are available in thicknesses from 1 to 4.5 mm and can be used for bags, belts, straps, wallets, home accessories and much more.

As a general guide:
1.0–1.2 mm: Suitable for smaller projects, inside pockets, etc.
1.4–1.6 mm: Ideal for wallets, bags and wet forming
2.0–2.2 mm: Ideal for bags, straps and home accessories
2.6–2.8 mm: Suitable for larger bags, belts and straps
3.0–3.5 mm: Suitable for large bags, heavy-duty belts and straps
3.5–4.5 mm: Suitable for heavy-duty dog leads, straps and harnesses

These are only general guidelines. A large bag can easily be made from thinner leather, just as a smaller bag can be made from thicker leather. The right thickness depends on both the function of your project and the look you want to achieve.
