These Japanese chisels are handmade and make diamond-shaped holes, which are used for saddle stitch. When making stitching holes for saddle stitch, first a crease must be made using either a creaser or a wing divider, after which the chisel is hammered through the leather with a rawhide maul, as it does not damage the metal of the chisel. A chisel is ideal to use for driving sewing holes for saddle stitch, as it ensures that all the holes will have the same perfect 45-degree angle. To ensure that all the sewing holes will have the same distance between them, put one prong down in the previous hole, so that the seam will be completely even.
