Leather

Leather

Welcome to our universe of leather – a natural, beautiful and sustainable material. We offer a wide selection of leather in different qualities, thicknesses, colours and cuts that can be adapted to any project and need.

What is leather?

Leather is a natural material made from cowhide. Each piece is unique, which is what makes leather special. As a surplus product from meat production, leather is a sustainable choice. By using leather, we utilize a resource that already exists and contribute to minimizing waste. The majority of our leather comes from European tanneries that work under strict environmental requirements. Many of them have certifications that document sustainable processes. You can find links to the certifications on the individual products. Leather is not only a natural and durable material, but also a material that becomes more beautiful over time. It is created to last for generations.

Tanning

There are two primary tanning methods: vegetable tanning and chrome tanning.

• Vegetable tanning: The oldest method, where the hides are treated in vats or drums with plant-based tanning agents. Each tannery has its own unique recipe. Vegetable tanning makes the leather firm and suitable for embossing, punching and wet shaping work as well as hand sewing.

• Chrome tanning: Introduced in the late 19th century. Here, the hides are treated with chromium salts, which bind to the leather fibers without filling the voids. This method produces a softer piece of leather. Chrome-tanned leather cannot be wet shaped and is not suitable for embossing and punching work.

Leather is available in different cuts. See them illustrated in the drawing.

Shoulders: The upper part of the back of the animal. Here, natural, visible neck folds and wrinkles may occur.

Double croupons: The lower part of the animal and one of the better cuts, known for its uniformity and size. Suitable for cutting belts.

Croupon: A half double croupon with the same properties, just smaller.

Belly: The belly skin, which is more elastic and uneven in thickness. Suitable for smaller projects.

Back: The entire middle piece down the spine. Long and often also a very strong piece of leather. Suitable for straps that require length and strength, such as harnesses and dog leads.

Side: A half skin split along the spine. A very large piece, often seen in connection with furniture leather, where a large piece of leather is needed.

Culatas: A side, but without the upper part of the neck.

Aniline, semi-aniline and dyed leather

· Aniline leather: Leather that has been tanned and possibly dyed through, with a natural surface and open pores.

· Semi-aniline leather: Through-dyed leather with a light surface finish. The surface is still natural, and the pores are visible and open.

· Leather with a protected/dyed surface: A richly coloured leather with a closed surface finish. This leather often has a very uniform surface.

How much is a square foot? Leather is measured in square feet (sqft). A square foot is 30 cm x 30 cm.
