These chisels are handmade in Japan and make diamond-shaped holes in the leather that are suitable for saddle stitch. When using saddle stitch, a crease must first be made by using either a creaser or a wing divider. In the crease, the chisel must then be hammered through the leather by using a rawhide maul, as it does not damage the metal. The pros of using a chisel to make stitching holes are that all the holes will have the same perfect 45-degree angle, and it is also timesaving compared to making the holes individually with an awl.
