These chisels are handmade in Japan and make diamond-shaped holes that are suitable for saddle stitch. When using saddle stitch for sewing, a crease is first made with either a creaser or a wing divider, after which the chisel is driven through the leather using a rawhide maul, as it does not damage the metal. The pros of using a chisel instead of an awl is that you ensure that all the holes are at a perfect 45-degree angle, and it is also faster to use. The Japanese chisels are available in several different sizes and with different numbers of prongs.
