The crochet awl, also known as a "jerk needle", is characterized by its pointed end with a hook.


When you use the crochet awl, you achieve a stitch similar to the one you get with a sewing machine. This means that the lower thread is pulled up through a hole, forms a loop around the upper thread and then pulled back down. Each stitch is therefore not locked like the saddler's stitch.
