Saddler's needles from John James are used for hand sewing in leather and hides. The needle doesn’t have a sharp tip, and thus holes must first be made in the leather or hide with either an awl or a chisel for the needle to penetrate the leather.

Choosing the right needle
When choosing a needle, there are several considerations to take into account. As a general rule, you must start off by using the smallest needle you can possibly sew with. The smaller the needle, the smaller the hole in the leather will be, which creates a neater finish.

• Size of the holes: If you are making holes with a precision chisel, you can choose a larger needle as the holes are quite large.
• Thickness of the thread: Choose a needle that matches the thread you have chosen to sew with. On all our threads we have indicated a recommended needle size.
