Eyelets are used to reinforce holes in materials such as leather, hide, fabric, tarpaulin and similar materials. They provide a neat and durable finish and prevent the material from fraying or tearing.

An eyelet consists of two parts:
• one part with a collar and a matching washer

The stated size in mm refers to the internal diameter of the hole – i.e. the approximate hole size after installation.

Facts

  • Material: Made of brass. The colours nickel, antique brass and black are surface treated.
  • Rustproof.

Application
Eyelets are often used for bags, belts, lace closures, tarpaulins, banners and many other projects where a cord, strap or hook needs to pass through the material.

How to install eyelets
Installing eyelets requires the correct tool matching the selected size. See specifications above.

Instructions (see installation video here):
Always make a test before you begin.

1.    Make a hole in the material using a hole punch.
For thick, firm and non-flexible materials, the hole should match the size of the selected eyelet.
For thinner, more stretchable and flexible materials, the hole should be 1–2 mm smaller than the selected eyelet.
If the material is very soft or loose, it can be beneficial to apply a piece of interfacing on the back to stabilise the area.

2.    Insert the part with the collar through the hole from the front of the material, and place the washer on the back. Turn the washer so that the smooth side faces upwards.

3. Use the appropriate tool – either a hand setter or a die for a press machine.

Hand setter: Use the setter together with a hammer – preferably a rawhide mallet or another hammer with a heavy, dead blow. Strike with firm, controlled blows from the back side, ensuring the material lies flat. The metal rolls over the washer and locks the parts in place. It is important to work on a stable surface – for example a wooden block or directly above a table leg.

Press machine die: Install the dies in the press machine. Place the part with the barrel in the lower die, position the material on top with the front side facing down, and then place the washer with the smooth side facing up. Press the parts together using the machine.
